Australia vs France Grading System

What kind of grade is this?

A Bachelor's / first-degree grade — for graduate (Master's) admission or employment

Got a school-leaving qualification instead — A-levels, Class 12, WASSCE, the Abitur? Here's what actually happens to those.

How does the Australia grading system work?

Australian universities use a descriptor-based system. HD threshold varies — some institutions set it at 80%, others at 85%. Always verify with your specific institution.

How does the France grading system work?

French universities use a 20-point scale where 10/20 is the pass mark. Most students score 10–14. A 14/20 is a genuinely strong result. Scores above 16 are rare.

Do Australia and France mark to the same standard?

No — and it is the difference in marking culture, not the arithmetic, that makes a direct comparison mislead. Here is how each country actually uses its own scale.

What a good grade means in Australia

Australian marking is stricter than the raw percentages suggest to an American reader. A High Distinction goes to roughly the top 5–10% of a cohort, and Australian universities rarely award marks above 90 at all — so a WAM in the high 70s is a genuinely strong record, not a middling one. A Credit average of 65 is the usual bar for master's entry, which means a Pass-level degree normally needs a graduate certificate or diploma as a stepping stone.

What a good grade means in France

The 20-point scale is not designed to be filled. Marks above 16 are rare, above 18 essentially never awarded, and 20 is treated as theoretically unattainable rather than a target — the distribution clusters between 8 and 16 with a passing mean around 11 to 13, and only a small percentage of students reach Très bien. A 14/20 is therefore a genuinely strong degree. Anyone converting by multiplying by five and reading "70%" will misjudge it in both directions depending on which country they are comparing against.

Will a grade from Australia get you into France?

French master's admission is decided programme by programme on your full application dossier — motivation, coursework, references and fit — rather than against a published minimum grade. The commonly repeated "you need 12/20" is not a rule any French university publishes, so we don't compare your grade against it.

HD → 4.0 GPA. Distinction → approximately 3.3 GPA. Evaluated similarly to UK credentials by WES.

What goes wrong converting grades from Australia to France?

The pass marks differ — 50 in Australia against 10.0 in France — so the two scales have different usable ranges and the middle of one is not the middle of the other.

Mistakes specific to Australia grades

  • Reading a WAM as a simple average. Later years are weighted more heavily, so it will not match the arithmetic mean of your marks.
  • Assuming an 85 is ordinary because it is 85%. It is a High Distinction, awarded to a small minority.
  • Quoting a GPA calculated yourself. Australian universities publish a WAM, and receiving institutions recalculate it their own way.

What should you do next, applying from Australia to France?

  1. Check the course, not the country. Entry requirements are set per programme and revised every cycle. We hold no published national bar for this destination, so the course page is the only figure that binds.
  2. Check whether an evaluation is even required. Unlike the US and Canada, France universities commonly assess foreign transcripts in-house. Confirm on the course page before paying for a report you may not need.
  3. Get your documents moving early. Australian transcripts carry a grading key explaining the descriptors and the institution's High Distinction threshold — include it, because the 80-versus-85 difference materially changes how your record reads. An AHEGS (Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement) is issued alongside the degree and explains the qualification in international terms.

What do these grading terms mean?

WAM (Weighted Average Mark)
The Australian overall average, where later and larger subjects count for more — a WAM of 65 is a Credit average and the usual bar for a master's.
Percentage scale
A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.
Honours degree
A bachelor's degree that includes a higher-level final year or research project — in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand it is often an extra year, and master's entry can depend on it.
GPA (Grade Point Average)
The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
Transcript
The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
Taught master's
A one-to-two-year postgraduate degree made mostly of classes and assignments, as opposed to a research master's built around a thesis.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 65 from Australia on France's scale?

Approximately 11.4–12.6 / 20 — Assez bien. That is a range rather than a single number because grade conversion is an estimate, and the range widens where either country's data is less certain. Enter your own grade in the converter above for your figure.

Can you study a master's in France with a degree from Australia?

French master's admission is decided programme by programme on your full application dossier — motivation, coursework, references and fit — rather than against a published minimum grade. The commonly repeated "you need 12/20" is not a rule any French university publishes, so we don't compare your grade against it. So converting your grade tells you how your result reads in France terms, but it will not tell you whether you clear a bar — because no such bar is published.
