How the Modified Bavarian Formula works
German universities convert foreign grades with a single linear formula defined in KMK guidance:
german grade = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − Nd) / (Nmax − Nmin)
Nmax is the best possible grade on your home scale, Nmin is the minimum passing grade, and Nd is your grade. The output runs from 1.0 (best) to 4.0 (minimum pass) — remember that the German scale is inverted: lower is better.
Worked example: an Indian student with 78% on a 0–100 scale with a pass mark of 40 gets 1 + 3 × (100 − 78) / (100 − 40) = 2.1 — “Gut”, which clears the typical 2.5 Numerus Clausus cutoff for many technical Master's programs.
