The same percentage is a different grade in each country
Grade compression is the key concept: in strict-marking systems very few students reach the top of the scale, so evaluators credit a lower raw number with a higher equivalent. WES and other evaluators publish per-country methodologies precisely because of this.
Here is what that means in practice. Every country below marks on a 0–100 percentage, and every figure is this site's own converter run at 60% and 72% — not a rule of thumb:

Ranges are US 4.0 GPA windows, width set by each country's confidence level. How these are worked out.
The spread is the whole point. At 72%:
- United Kingdom — First Class (1st), about 3.9 on a 4.0 scale
- Japan — Good (良), about 2.8
Same raw number, a full grade point apart. Any converter that asks only for a percentage, without the country, cannot be trusted for application planning.
Why the United States is not in that table. On GradeBridge the US system is the 4.0 GPA — that is the scale American transcripts report. A US percentage is set course by course by the instructor, with no national mapping to convert from, so there is no honest row to write. If you hold a US percentage, your own institution's syllabus is the only authority on what letter grade it earns.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a percentage to a 4.0 GPA?
It depends entirely on which country awarded the percentage, because grading cultures differ sharply. In India a 78% is a Distinction, worth about 3.76 on the US 4.0 scale. The same 78% in the UK is a strong First Class (1st) worth about 3.93, because UK marking almost never goes above 85%. Why can't I just divide my percentage by 25?
Because a percentage means different things in different systems. UK marking rarely goes above 85% and Indian marking rarely above 90%, so the top of those scales is effectively unreachable — dividing by 25 silently assumes 100% is attainable everywhere. Formula-only converters that ignore the country can be wrong by more than a full grade point. Evaluators like WES convert band by band per country, which is what this tool does.
What GPA is 60% equivalent to?
There is no single answer, which is the point. 60% is an Upper Second (2:1, ≈3.3 US GPA) in the UK, Ireland and Kenya; a First Class in India (≈3.0); a Lower Second (2:2) in South Africa (≈2.7); and a bare pass in China and Japan, where 60 is the pass mark itself (≈2.0).
