How does the Colombia grading system work?

Colombian universities primarily use a 0–5 scale where 3.0 is minimum pass. Some use a 0–10 scale instead.

How does the India grading system work?

Most Indian universities use a percentage system (0–100%). The UGC Choice Based Credit System introduced a 10-point CGPA scale now widely used alongside percentages. Grade distributions are compressed — very few students score above 85%, making 78% a genuinely strong result.

Do Colombia and India mark to the same standard?

No — and it is the difference in marking culture, not the arithmetic, that makes a direct comparison mislead. Here is how each country actually uses its own scale.

What a good grade means in Colombia

With only two points between the pass mark and the ceiling, the Colombian scale is one of the most compressed in use anywhere, and proportional conversion distorts it badly — a 4.0 is not "80%", it is a strong result well above the passing threshold. Marks above 4.5 are uncommon, so an average in the low 4s already places a student well within their cohort. Send the grading key, because the scale's range is not self-evident from the number alone.

What a good grade means in India

This is the most misunderstood thing about Indian grades abroad: Indian marking is severe at the top. Very few students exceed 85%, and an aggregate above 90% is exceptional across an entire graduating cohort. A 78% is not a mediocre result — it is a strong First Class that credential evaluators routinely read as a US GPA around 3.6–3.8. If you compare your percentage directly against a British or American percentage you will badly undersell yourself, because those systems hand out high percentages far more freely than Indian examiners do.

Will a grade from Colombia get you into India?

We do not yet hold published entry requirements for India, so we do not compare your grade against a bar we cannot cite. The conversion above still tells you how your result reads in India terms.

Excelente (4.5–5.0) → approximately 4.0 GPA.

What goes wrong converting grades from Colombia to India?

India rarely awards near the top of its own scale — 90 is realistically the ceiling rather than 100 — so a converted result will look lower than you expect even when it is strong.

Mistakes specific to Colombia grades

  • Converting proportionally to a percentage. With a usable range of 3.0 to 5.0, that arithmetic misrepresents the result substantially.
  • Assuming every Colombian university uses the 0–5 scale. A minority use 0–10 or 0–100, and the number alone will not tell you which.
  • Treating small decimals as noise. On a two-point usable range, 0.3 is a meaningful difference.

What should you do next, applying from Colombia to India?

  1. Check the course, not the country. Entry requirements are set per programme and revised every cycle. We hold no published national bar for this destination, so the course page is the only figure that binds.
  2. Check whether an evaluation is even required. Unlike the US and Canada, India universities commonly assess foreign transcripts in-house. Confirm on the course page before paying for a report you may not need.
  3. Get your documents moving early. Universities normally require your transcript sent directly by your institution rather than as a copy from you, which takes longer than most applicants expect.
  4. Read both systems in full. How Colombia grading works · How India grading works

What do these grading terms mean?

Percentage scale
A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.
GPA (Grade Point Average)
The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
Transcript
The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
Credential evaluation
A paid report from an approved company that restates your foreign qualification in local terms, which many US and Canadian universities require before they will assess you.
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)
The same idea as a GPA but covering your whole degree rather than one term — the scale differs by country (India 10, Nigeria 5.0, Pakistan 4.0), so the number alone means nothing without its scale.
Degree classification
A named band your final result falls into — First Class, 2:1, Distinction — used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 4.5 from Colombia on India's scale?

Approximately 80–90 / 100 — Distinction. That is a range rather than a single number because grade conversion is an estimate, and the range widens where either country's data is less certain. Enter your own grade in the converter above for your figure.
