How does the Germany grading system work?

German universities use an inverted scale where 1.0 is the best grade and 5.0 is a fail. Pass mark is 4.0. Most students score between 2.0 and 3.5.

What a good grade means in Germany

German marking is demanding, and the distribution sits lower than newcomers expect: most graduates finish between 2.0 and 2.5, and a final grade of 1.x is a distinctly strong result rather than a baseline. Read a German 2.3 as a good degree, not a mediocre one. Admission practice varies more than in most countries — many master's programmes publish no minimum grade at all and simply require a relevant bachelor's, while competitive and restricted programmes select on the grade alone.

What a good grade means in Iran

As in every 20-point system, the top of the scale is largely unused: a 17 is an excellent result and marks above 18 are very rare, so a moadel of 15 represents a strong degree rather than the 75% it becomes under arithmetic conversion. Iranian universities — Sharif, Tehran and Amirkabir in particular — are well known to admissions committees in engineering and the sciences, and a strong moadel from those institutions is read in context rather than at face value.

Will a grade from Germany get you into Iran?

What goes wrong converting grades from Germany to Iran?

Germany runs an inverted scale where 1.0 is the BEST grade, while Iran runs the normal way round. Reading a result from Germany as though higher were better inverts the conclusion entirely.

Mistakes specific to Germany grades

• Reading the scale the wrong way round. A 1.3 is excellent and a 3.7 is barely a pass — the opposite of the instinct from a percentage system.
• Assuming there is a minimum grade for master's entry. Many German programmes publish none; others set 2.5.
• Converting with a generic formula when the university specifies the Bavarian one. Use the receiving institution's stated method.

What do these grading terms mean?

Percentage scale

A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.

GPA (Grade Point Average)

The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.

Degree classification

A named band your final result falls into — First Class, 2:1, Distinction — used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.

Transcript

The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.

Taught master's

A one-to-two-year postgraduate degree made mostly of classes and assignments, as opposed to a research master's built around a thesis.

Grade compression

Where a marking culture rarely uses the top of its own scale, so the highest grades anyone actually earns sit well below the theoretical maximum.
