How does the Germany grading system work?

German universities use an inverted scale where 1.0 is the best grade and 5.0 is a fail. Pass mark is 4.0. Most students score between 2.0 and 3.5.

What a good grade means in Germany

German marking is demanding, and the distribution sits lower than newcomers expect: most graduates finish between 2.0 and 2.5, and a final grade of 1.x is a distinctly strong result rather than a baseline. Read a German 2.3 as a good degree, not a mediocre one. Admission practice varies more than in most countries — many master's programmes publish no minimum grade at all and simply require a relevant bachelor's, while competitive and restricted programmes select on the grade alone.

What a good grade means in Nigeria

Nigerian classification is strict, and it travels better than most applicants expect. A First Class is genuinely rare, and Cambridge's own equivalence table treats a Nigerian First (CGPA 4.5/5, or 70%) as matching a UK First — independent confirmation from a named institution that the classification is understood abroad. A 2:1 is a solid, competitive result for master's applications across the UK, Ireland and Australia, and you should present it as such rather than apologising for the number.

Will a grade from Germany get you into Nigeria?

What goes wrong converting grades from Germany to Nigeria?

Mistakes specific to Germany grades

• Reading the scale the wrong way round. A 1.3 is excellent and a 3.7 is barely a pass — the opposite of the instinct from a percentage system.
• Assuming there is a minimum grade for master's entry. Many German programmes publish none; others set 2.5.
• Converting with a generic formula when the university specifies the Bavarian one. Use the receiving institution's stated method.

What do these grading terms mean?

Percentage scale

A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.

GPA (Grade Point Average)

The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.

Degree classification

A named band your final result falls into — First Class, 2:1, Distinction — used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.

Transcript

The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.

Taught master's

A one-to-two-year postgraduate degree made mostly of classes and assignments, as opposed to a research master's built around a thesis.

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)

The same idea as a GPA but covering your whole degree rather than one term — the scale differs by country (India 10, Nigeria 5.0, Pakistan 4.0), so the number alone means nothing without its scale.
