Germany vs Sweden Grading System

Enter your grade to convert between Numerical Scale (1.0–5.0, inverted) and A–F / U–G–VG–MVG

What kind of grade is this?

A Bachelor's / first-degree grade — for graduate (Master's) admission or employment

Got a school-leaving qualification instead — A-levels, Class 12, WASSCE, the Abitur? Here's what actually happens to those.

How does the Germany grading system work?

German universities use an inverted scale where 1.0 is the best grade and 5.0 is a fail. Pass mark is 4.0. Most students score between 2.0 and 3.5.

Do Germany and Sweden mark to the same standard?

No — and it is the difference in marking culture, not the arithmetic, that makes a direct comparison mislead. Here is how each country actually uses its own scale.

What a good grade means in Germany

German marking is demanding, and the distribution sits lower than newcomers expect: most graduates finish between 2.0 and 2.5, and a final grade of 1.x is a distinctly strong result rather than a baseline. Read a German 2.3 as a good degree, not a mediocre one. Admission practice varies more than in most countries — many master's programmes publish no minimum grade at all and simply require a relevant bachelor's, while competitive and restricted programmes select on the grade alone.

What a good grade means in Sweden

This is the one country on the site where we openly say the conversion is an approximation rather than a measurement, and the reason is structural rather than a gap in our research: there is no common scale to convert from. A Swedish applicant is generally better served presenting their transcript as it is, with the ECTS letters where they exist, than converting it into a percentage or GPA that implies a precision the original never had. Admissions offices across Europe read Swedish transcripts routinely and are used to this.

Will a grade from Germany get you into Sweden?

Sweden has no single national grading scale — universities variously use A–F, G/VG/MVG, or plain pass/fail, and many courses award no numeric grade at all. There is no common scale on which an entry requirement could be stated, and Swedish master's selection weighs completed credits and course match more heavily than a grade average.

Sehr gut (1.0–1.5) → A/4.0 GPA. To convert INTO the German system: Modified Bavarian Formula = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − grade) / (Nmax − Nmin).

What goes wrong converting grades from Germany to Sweden?

Germany runs an inverted scale where 1.0 is the BEST grade, while Sweden runs the normal way round. Reading a result from Germany as though higher were better inverts the conclusion entirely.

Mistakes specific to Germany grades

  • Reading the scale the wrong way round. A 1.3 is excellent and a 3.7 is barely a pass — the opposite of the instinct from a percentage system.
  • Assuming there is a minimum grade for master's entry. Many German programmes publish none; others set 2.5.
  • Converting with a generic formula when the university specifies the Bavarian one. Use the receiving institution's stated method.

What should you do next, applying from Germany to Sweden?

  1. Check the course, not the country. Entry requirements are set per programme and revised every cycle. We hold no published national bar for this destination, so the course page is the only figure that binds.
  2. Do not read the two scales the same way round. Germany runs an inverted scale where a lower number is the better grade, while Sweden runs the usual way. This is the single most common misreading on this route.
  3. Check whether an evaluation is even required. Unlike the US and Canada, Sweden universities commonly assess foreign transcripts in-house. Confirm on the course page before paying for a report you may not need.
  4. Get your documents moving early. You will normally hold a Transcript of Records listing modules and grades plus a degree certificate (Urkunde) and a Diploma Supplement, which explains the German system in English — send the Supplement, as it does much of the explaining for you.
  5. Read both systems in full. How Germany grading works · How Sweden grading works

What do these grading terms mean?

Percentage scale
A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.
GPA (Grade Point Average)
The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
Degree classification
A named band your final result falls into — First Class, 2:1, Distinction — used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.
Transcript
The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
Taught master's
A one-to-two-year postgraduate degree made mostly of classes and assignments, as opposed to a research master's built around a thesis.
Credits / credit hours
A measure of how much a subject counts toward your degree — bigger subjects carry more credits and pull your average further.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 2.5 from Germany on Sweden's scale?

Approximately 65–77 / 100 — Pass with distinction (VG). That is a range rather than a single number because grade conversion is an estimate, and the range widens where either country's data is less certain. Enter your own grade in the converter above for your figure.

Can you study a master's in Sweden with a degree from Germany?

Sweden has no single national grading scale — universities variously use A–F, G/VG/MVG, or plain pass/fail, and many courses award no numeric grade at all. There is no common scale on which an entry requirement could be stated, and Swedish master's selection weighs completed credits and course match more heavily than a grade average. So converting your grade tells you how your result reads in Sweden terms, but it will not tell you whether you clear a bar — because no such bar is published.
