Do Malaysia and the Netherlands mark to the same standard?
No — and it is the difference in marking culture, not the arithmetic, that makes a direct comparison mislead. Here is how each country actually uses its own scale.
What a good grade means in Malaysia
Malaysia's hybrid inheritance is its defining feature: the number is American and the classification is British, so a Malaysian graduate can present whichever framing suits the destination. A CGPA of 3.5 reads directly as a US 3.5, while the accompanying First or Second Class Upper reads directly to a UK admissions office. That dual legibility is a genuine advantage, and the mistake is to present only one half of it.
What a good grade means in the Netherlands
This is the most extreme grade compression of any major destination, and Nuffic — the Dutch credential authority — states it outright: high grades of 9 and 10 are rarely awarded regardless of how good the work is, with a 10 given in roughly 0.1% of cases. The most common grades are 6 and 7, and an average of 8 is considered excellent. The convention dates to the nineteenth century, when 10 was defined as absolute perfection. Read a Dutch 7.5 as a genuinely good degree, and never as "75%".
Will a grade from Malaysia get you into the Netherlands?
Netherlands universities typically ask for 7.0 / 10 for a taught master's — a one-to-two-year postgraduate degree made mostly of classes. On Malaysia's scale that is roughly 2.60–2.79 / 4 (Satisfactory). Read these against Dutch grading culture, not as ordinary percentages: a 7.0 is a solid result on a scale where an 8 is already excellent. The University of Twente asks 7.5 of applicants holding an international degree. A Dutch academic (WO) bachelor's often gives direct access to the matching master's with no grade bar at all — these figures apply to selective and research master's.

Malaysian 4.0 CGPA maps near-directly to US GPA.
What goes wrong converting grades from Malaysia to the Netherlands?
Netherlands rarely awards near the top of its own scale — 9.0 is realistically the ceiling rather than 10.0 — so a converted result will look lower than you expect even when it is strong.
Mistakes specific to Malaysia grades
- Presenting only the CGPA when applying to the UK or Commonwealth. The classification is what those admissions offices read first.
- Assuming classification thresholds are national. They vary between Malaysian universities, so quote what your own transcript states.
- Confusing a Malaysian CGPA with a Singaporean CAP. Malaysia uses a 4.0 maximum, NUS and NTU use 5.0.
What should you do next, applying from Malaysia to the Netherlands?
- Check the course, not the country. Entry requirements are set per programme and revised every cycle. The 7.0 / 10 above is the typical bar, not a guarantee — selective courses ask for more.
- Check whether an evaluation is even required. Unlike the US and Canada, Netherlands universities commonly assess foreign transcripts in-house. Confirm on the course page before paying for a report you may not need.
- Get your documents moving early. Universities normally require your transcript sent directly by your institution rather than as a copy from you, which takes longer than most applicants expect.

What do these grading terms mean?
- CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)
- The same idea as a GPA but covering your whole degree rather than one term — the scale differs by country (India 10, Nigeria 5.0, Pakistan 4.0), so the number alone means nothing without its scale.
- GPA (Grade Point Average)
- The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
- Degree classification
- A named band your final result falls into — First Class, 2:1, Distinction — used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.
- First Class Honours
- The top degree classification, awarded to a small minority of graduates — usually 70%+ in the UK and Ireland, or a CGPA of 4.50+ on Nigeria's 5.0 scale.
- 2:1 (Upper Second Class)
- The second-highest degree class, and the grade most UK and Irish master's courses ask for — usually 60–69%.
- Transcript
- The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
Frequently asked questions
What is a 3.50 from Malaysia on the Netherlands' scale?
Approximately 8.4–8.6 / 10 — Good (Goed). That is a range rather than a single number because grade conversion is an estimate, and the range widens where either country's data is less certain. Enter your own grade in the converter above for your figure.
Can you study a master's in the Netherlands with a degree from Malaysia?
Yes — universities in the Netherlands typically ask for 7.0 / 10 on their own scale. On Malaysia's scale that is roughly 2.60–2.79 / 4 (Satisfactory). Read these against Dutch grading culture, not as ordinary percentages: a 7.0 is a solid result on a scale where an 8 is already excellent. What grade do you need in Malaysia for a master's in the Netherlands?
About 2.60–2.79 / 4 — Satisfactory. That is the Netherlands' published bar of 7.0 / 10 restated on Malaysia's scale, so it is a conversion of a conversion and is shown as a range for that reason. Competitive courses ask above the published minimum, so treat it as the floor rather than the target.
