How does the Nepal grading system work?
Nepali universities traditionally use a percentage/division system similar to India. Tribhuvan University uses this system. Some newer universities have adopted 4.0 GPA.

Do Nepal and Singapore mark to the same standard?
No β and it is the difference in marking culture, not the arithmetic, that makes a direct comparison mislead. Here is how each country actually uses its own scale.
What a good grade means in Nepal
Nepali marking is strict in the same way Indian marking is, and for the same historical reasons: the scales are related and the examining culture is conservative. Scores above 80% are rare and an aggregate above 85% is exceptional, so a First Division at 65% is a genuinely respectable degree rather than the unimpressive number it looks like to a US reader. Anyone converting a Nepali percentage as though it were an American one will understate their result by a wide margin.
What a good grade means in Singapore
Singaporean degrees are highly regarded internationally, and the grading is demanding: NUS and NTU run bell-curve moderation, so grades reflect standing within a strong cohort rather than an absolute mark. That makes a CAP of 4.0 a genuinely good result even though, mapped to US letters, it sits at a B+ rather than an A. The honours class is the signal to lead with abroad, because Highest Distinction and Distinction are understood in Commonwealth terms in a way a raw 5.0-scale number is not.
Will a grade from Nepal get you into Singapore?
Singapore universities typically ask for 3.50 / 5 for a taught master's β a one-to-two-year postgraduate degree made mostly of classes. On Nepal's scale that is roughly 56β64 / 100 (First Division). Singapore states this as an honours class rather than a CAP figure β Honours (Merit) / Second Class and above, which begins at 3.5 on the 5.0 CAP scale modelled here. NTU's published bar is looser still ("at least a good Bachelor degree"). Both universities stress that meeting the minimum does not imply admission, because selection is competitive against the rest of the applicant pool.

Distinction (75%+) β approximately 3.7 GPA.
What goes wrong converting grades from Nepal to Singapore?
Nepal rarely awards near the top of its own scale, so a result that looks modest in Nepal terms converts higher than a direct comparison suggests.
Mistakes specific to Nepal grades
- Reading a Nepali percentage as a US one. A 65% is a solid First Division here, not the low grade the same number would signal in the United States.
- Assuming every Nepali university uses percentages. Kathmandu and Pokhara programmes often issue a 4.0 GPA instead, and mixing the two produces nonsense.
- Submitting the mark sheet alone. Evaluators want the character certificate, migration certificate and provisional or final degree certificate as well.
What should you do next, applying from Nepal to Singapore?
- Check the course, not the country. Entry requirements are set per programme and revised every cycle. The 3.50 / 5 above is the typical bar, not a guarantee β selective courses ask for more.
- Check whether an evaluation is even required. Unlike the US and Canada, Singapore universities commonly assess foreign transcripts in-house. Confirm on the course page before paying for a report you may not need.
- Get your documents moving early. Nepali applications abroad usually require a fuller document set than most countries: the consolidated mark sheet, the character certificate, the migration certificate and the degree or provisional certificate. Tribhuvan University can be slow to issue transcripts, so begin the request well before any application deadline.

What do these grading terms mean?
- Percentage scale
- A 0β100 marking scale β but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.
- GPA (Grade Point Average)
- The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0β4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top β so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90β100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
- Degree classification
- A named band your final result falls into β First Class, 2:1, Distinction β used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.
- Grade compression
- Where a marking culture rarely uses the top of its own scale, so the highest grades anyone actually earns sit well below the theoretical maximum.
- Transcript
- The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got β not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
- Credential evaluation
- A paid report from an approved company that restates your foreign qualification in local terms, which many US and Canadian universities require before they will assess you.
Frequently asked questions
What is a 75 from Nepal on Singapore's scale?
Approximately 4.25β4.83 / 5 β Honours (Highest Distinction). That is a range rather than a single number because grade conversion is an estimate, and the range widens where either country's data is less certain. Enter your own grade in the converter above for your figure.
Can you study a master's in Singapore with a degree from Nepal?
Yes β universities in Singapore typically ask for 3.50 / 5 on their own scale. On Nepal's scale that is roughly 56β64 / 100 (First Division). Singapore states this as an honours class rather than a CAP figure β Honours (Merit) / Second Class and above, which begins at 3.5 on the 5.0 CAP scale modelled here. What percentage do you need in Nepal for a master's in Singapore?
About 56β64 / 100 β First Division. That is Singapore's published bar of 3.50 / 5 restated on Nepal's scale, so it is a conversion of a conversion and is shown as a range for that reason. Competitive courses ask above the published minimum, so treat it as the floor rather than the target.
