Do Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates mark to the same standard?
No β and it is the difference in marking culture, not the arithmetic, that makes a direct comparison mislead. Here is how each country actually uses its own scale.
What a good grade means in Saudi Arabia
The descriptors do more work than the number in Saudi Arabia, and they are set high: Mumtaz begins at 4.51 on the 5.0 scale, so the exceptional band is genuinely narrow. Our own data previously started Mumtaz at 4.25, which over-credited grades by roughly a quarter of a band until it was corrected against the published scale. For an applicant, the practical consequence is that a 4.3 is Jayyid Jiddan β very good β rather than the near-perfect result it looks like when read against a 4.0 maximum.
What a good grade means in the United Arab Emirates
Because the 4.0 scale maps almost directly onto the US one, UAE grades need little translation, and a 3.0 CGPA is the standard published bar for master's entry within the country itself. The genuine complication is not the scale but the sheer variety of institutions: a degree from a branch campus of a British university will be classified in British terms while a degree from a US-modelled institution reports a straight GPA, and an applicant should present whichever framing their transcript actually uses rather than converting between them.
Will a grade from Saudi Arabia get you into the United Arab Emirates?
United Arab Emirates universities typically ask for 3.00 / 4 for a taught master's β a one-to-two-year postgraduate degree made mostly of classes. On Saudi Arabia's scale that is roughly 3.33β3.76 / 5 (Very Good (Jayyid Jiddan)). A 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA is the standard UAE master's entry bar. UAEU also operates a conditional route for applicants between 2.5 and 3.0, who must then reach a 3.0 across their first 9 credit hours β so a grade below the threshold is a condition to satisfy rather than an automatic refusal.

Mistakes specific to Saudi Arabia grades
- Quoting a GPA without saying whether the maximum is 5.0 or 4.0. Both are in use and the same number means very different things.
- Reading a 4.2 as near-perfect. On the 5.0 scale that is Jayyid Jiddan, comfortably short of the Mumtaz threshold at 4.51.
- Skipping attestation. Saudi documents commonly require attestation before foreign universities will accept them.
What should you do next, applying from Saudi Arabia to the United Arab Emirates?
- Check the course, not the country. Entry requirements are set per programme and revised every cycle. The 3.00 / 4 above is the typical bar, not a guarantee β selective courses ask for more.
- Check whether an evaluation is even required. Unlike the US and Canada, United Arab Emirates universities commonly assess foreign transcripts in-house. Confirm on the course page before paying for a report you may not need.
- Get your documents moving early. Universities normally require your transcript sent directly by your institution rather than as a copy from you, which takes longer than most applicants expect.

What do these grading terms mean?
- GPA (Grade Point Average)
- The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0β4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top β so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90β100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
- CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)
- The same idea as a GPA but covering your whole degree rather than one term β the scale differs by country (India 10, Nigeria 5.0, Pakistan 4.0), so the number alone means nothing without its scale.
- Percentage scale
- A 0β100 marking scale β but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.
- Transcript
- The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got β not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
- Credential evaluation
- A paid report from an approved company that restates your foreign qualification in local terms, which many US and Canadian universities require before they will assess you.
- Degree classification
- A named band your final result falls into β First Class, 2:1, Distinction β used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.
Frequently asked questions
What is a 4.51 from Saudi Arabia on the United Arab Emirates' scale?
Approximately 3.45β4.00 / 4 β Excellent. That is a range rather than a single number because grade conversion is an estimate, and the range widens where either country's data is less certain. Enter your own grade in the converter above for your figure.

Yes β universities in the United Arab Emirates typically ask for 3.00 / 4 on their own scale. On Saudi Arabia's scale that is roughly 3.33β3.76 / 5 (Very Good (Jayyid Jiddan)). A 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA is the standard UAE master's entry bar. What grade do you need in Saudi Arabia for a master's in the United Arab Emirates?
About 3.33β3.76 / 5 β Very Good (Jayyid Jiddan). That is the United Arab Emirates' published bar of 3.00 / 4 restated on Saudi Arabia's scale, so it is a conversion of a conversion and is shown as a range for that reason. Competitive courses ask above the published minimum, so treat it as the floor rather than the target.
