Do Singapore and Spain mark to the same standard?

No — and it is the difference in marking culture, not the arithmetic, that makes a direct comparison mislead. Here is how each country actually uses its own scale.

What a good grade means in Singapore

Singaporean degrees are highly regarded internationally, and the grading is demanding: NUS and NTU run bell-curve moderation, so grades reflect standing within a strong cohort rather than an absolute mark. That makes a CAP of 4.0 a genuinely good result even though, mapped to US letters, it sits at a B+ rather than an A. The honours class is the signal to lead with abroad, because Highest Distinction and Distinction are understood in Commonwealth terms in a way a raw 5.0-scale number is not.

What a good grade means in Spain

Spanish marking is stricter than the 0–10 scale suggests to anyone reading it as a percentage divided by ten. Sobresaliente at 9 is uncommon, and Notable — from 7 — already represents a good degree. Matrícula de Honor is the one to highlight abroad because it is quota-limited: it tells a foreign admissions office you were among the top few in the class, which no raw number conveys on its own.

Will a grade from Singapore get you into Spain?

We do not yet hold published entry requirements for Spain, so we do not compare your grade against a bar we cannot cite. The conversion above still tells you how your result reads in Spain terms.

For NUS/NTU (5.0 CAP): 4.0–5.0 (Honours HD) → approximately 4.0 US GPA.

What goes wrong converting grades from Singapore to Spain?

The pass marks differ — 2.00 in Singapore against 5.0 in Spain — so the two scales have different usable ranges and the middle of one is not the middle of the other.

Mistakes specific to Singapore grades

  • Reading a CAP of 4.0 as equivalent to a US 4.0. On the 5.0 scale it corresponds to roughly a B+ average — a good result, but not a perfect one.
  • Quoting a CAP without saying whether the scale is 5.0 (NUS, NTU) or 4.0 (SMU). The two are not interchangeable.
  • Omitting the honours class. Highest Distinction and Distinction translate far better internationally than the underlying number.

What should you do next, applying from Singapore to Spain?

  1. Check the course, not the country. Entry requirements are set per programme and revised every cycle. We hold no published national bar for this destination, so the course page is the only figure that binds.
  2. Check whether an evaluation is even required. Unlike the US and Canada, Spain universities commonly assess foreign transcripts in-house. Confirm on the course page before paying for a report you may not need.
  3. Get your documents moving early. Universities normally require your transcript sent directly by your institution rather than as a copy from you, which takes longer than most applicants expect.

What do these grading terms mean?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)
The same idea as a GPA but covering your whole degree rather than one term — the scale differs by country (India 10, Nigeria 5.0, Pakistan 4.0), so the number alone means nothing without its scale.
GPA (Grade Point Average)
The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
Degree classification
A named band your final result falls into — First Class, 2:1, Distinction — used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.
Honours degree
A bachelor's degree that includes a higher-level final year or research project — in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand it is often an extra year, and master's entry can depend on it.
Transcript
The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
Percentage scale
A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 3.50 from Singapore on Spain's scale?

Approximately 6.5–7.5 / 10 — Notable (Good). That is a range rather than a single number because grade conversion is an estimate, and the range widens where either country's data is less certain. Enter your own grade in the converter above for your figure.
