How does the Egypt grading system work?
Egyptian universities use a percentage system under Supreme Council of Universities oversight. Mumtaz (Excellent) is awarded at 85%+ (some faculties set it at 90%), so an 88% is a genuinely top result. Grading varies by faculty.
Egyptian universities mark out of 100 and use Arabic descriptors: Mumtaz (excellent) from 85, Jayyid Jiddan (very good) from 75, Jayyid (good) from 65 and Maqbul (pass) from 50.
The exact Mumtaz threshold varies by faculty — health science faculties commonly set it at 85 and arts faculties at 90 — so the same mark can carry a different descriptor at two institutions.
The descriptor, not the number, is what appears on the degree certificate and what Egyptian employers and universities read first — so lead with Mumtaz or Jayyid Jiddan on an application rather than the raw percentage.

The table runs to 100, but in practice Egypt rarely awards above 90. That is the ceiling the converter anchors to, which is why it will never output a grade almost nobody in Egypt actually receives. Why we do that.
What does a good grade actually look like in Egypt?
Egyptian marking is conservative at the top: Mumtaz begins at 85 and high marks are genuinely rare, so an aggregate in the 80s is a strong result rather than the middling one it would be in the United States. This is an area where our own data was previously wrong — we had Mumtaz starting at 80, which over-credited a whole country until it was corrected — and it illustrates the wider point: an Egyptian 82 is Jayyid Jiddan, a very good degree, and reading it as an American 82% both flatters and misleads.

What do people get wrong about grades from Egypt?
- Reading an Egyptian percentage as an American one. An 82 is Jayyid Jiddan here, a genuinely strong result, not the unremarkable grade it appears in the US.
- Assuming the Mumtaz threshold is fixed. It varies by faculty between 85 and 90, so check what your own certificate states.
- Submitting the certificate without the transcript. Evaluators want the year-by-year record, not only the final descriptor.
What grade do you need to study abroad from Egypt?
Each destination below publishes its own typical entry requirement for a taught master's — a one-to-two-year postgraduate degree made mostly of classes. The last column restates that bar in Egypt's own grading terms, so you can hold it against your actual transcript instead of converting in your head.
The last column is a double conversion — the destination's bar onto the US 4.0 scale and then onto Egypt's, so its uncertainty is wider than a single conversion and it is shown as a range for that reason. Only destinations whose entry requirement we have read and cited appear here. Several countries publish no numeric bar at all — France admits on the dossier, Japan by entrance examination — and others we simply have not researched yet. An absent row never means “no requirement”.
The last column links the organisations that maintain each country's programme data — we hold none of it ourselves, and none of them can tell you whether you will be admitted. What do these grading terms mean?
- Percentage scale
- A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.
- GPA (Grade Point Average)
- The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
- Degree classification
- A named band your final result falls into — First Class, 2:1, Distinction — used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.
- Transcript
- The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
- Credential evaluation
- A paid report from an approved company that restates your foreign qualification in local terms, which many US and Canadian universities require before they will assess you.
