What a good grade means in Bangladesh

Bangladeshi marking sits between the Indian and the US pattern: an A+ requires 80%, which is demanding by US standards but reachable, and a CGPA above 3.5 on the 4.0 scale is a genuinely strong result. Because two scales circulate, the most valuable thing you can do is state yours explicitly on every application — more Bangladeshi applications are misread for that reason than for anything to do with the grades themselves.

What a good grade means in India

This is the most misunderstood thing about Indian grades abroad: Indian marking is severe at the top. Very few students exceed 85%, and an aggregate above 90% is exceptional across an entire graduating cohort. A 78% is not a mediocre result — it is a strong First Class that credential evaluators routinely read as a US GPA around 3.6–3.8. If you compare your percentage directly against a British or American percentage you will badly undersell yourself, because those systems hand out high percentages far more freely than Indian examiners do.

What goes wrong converting grades from Bangladesh to India?

India rarely awards near the top of its own scale — 90 is realistically the ceiling rather than 100 — so a converted result will look lower than you expect even when it is strong.

Mistakes specific to Bangladesh grades

• Quoting a GPA without its scale. "GPA 4.0" means a perfect result on the 4.0 scale and a fairly ordinary one on the 5.0 scale.
• Mixing your HSC (secondary school) GPA with your degree CGPA. They measure different qualifications and lead to different applications.
• Assuming all Bangladeshi universities use the same conversion. The UGC scheme is a framework, and institutions apply it with variations.

What do these grading terms mean?

GPA (Grade Point Average)

The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)

The same idea as a GPA but covering your whole degree rather than one term — the scale differs by country (India 10, Nigeria 5.0, Pakistan 4.0), so the number alone means nothing without its scale.

Percentage scale

A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.

Credential evaluation

A paid report from an approved company that restates your foreign qualification in local terms, which many US and Canadian universities require before they will assess you.

Transcript

The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.

Honours degree

A bachelor's degree that includes a higher-level final year or research project — in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand it is often an extra year, and master's entry can depend on it.
