How does the Bangladesh grading system work?
Bangladeshi universities use 4.0 or 5.0 GPA scales. The 4.0 scale is most common at private universities. Always confirm which scale your institution uses.
Bangladeshi universities use a GPA — a grade point average — but on either a 4.0 or a 5.0 scale, and which one applies depends on your institution. The 4.0 scale, following the UGC's Uniform Grading Scheme, is standard at private universities and most public ones.
On the 4.0 scale the minimum pass is a D at 40%, and A+ from 80% is the ceiling. Your transcript should state the scale; if it does not, the grade alone is ambiguous.
The 5.0 scale appears mainly at secondary level (SSC and HSC examinations) but is used by some universities too — a fact that regularly causes a university grade to be read against the wrong scale abroad.

What do these grading terms mean?
- GPA (Grade Point Average)
- The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
- CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)
- The same idea as a GPA but covering your whole degree rather than one term — the scale differs by country (India 10, Nigeria 5.0, Pakistan 4.0), so the number alone means nothing without its scale.
- Percentage scale
- A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.
- Credential evaluation
- A paid report from an approved company that restates your foreign qualification in local terms, which many US and Canadian universities require before they will assess you.
- Transcript
- The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
- Honours degree
- A bachelor's degree that includes a higher-level final year or research project — in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand it is often an extra year, and master's entry can depend on it.
