How does the Czech Republic grading system work?

Czech universities use an inverted 1–4 scale where 1 is the best grade. Minimum pass is 3. Some use a 1–5 scale.

How does the India grading system work?

Most Indian universities use a percentage system (0–100%). The UGC Choice Based Credit System introduced a 10-point CGPA scale now widely used alongside percentages. Grade distributions are compressed — very few students score above 85%, making 78% a genuinely strong result.

Do the Czech Republic and India mark to the same standard?

No — and it is the difference in marking culture, not the arithmetic, that makes a direct comparison mislead. Here is how each country actually uses its own scale.

What a good grade means in the Czech Republic

With only three passing grades, a Czech transcript compresses a wide range of performance into very few values — a 1 covers everything from good to outstanding. That coarseness, combined with the inverted direction, makes Czech results easy to misread abroad in both directions: a 2 is a solid result rather than a near-fail, and the absence of a numeric grade on zápočet subjects is normal rather than a gap in the record.

What a good grade means in India

This is the most misunderstood thing about Indian grades abroad: Indian marking is severe at the top. Very few students exceed 85%, and an aggregate above 90% is exceptional across an entire graduating cohort. A 78% is not a mediocre result — it is a strong First Class that credential evaluators routinely read as a US GPA around 3.6–3.8. If you compare your percentage directly against a British or American percentage you will badly undersell yourself, because those systems hand out high percentages far more freely than Indian examiners do.

Will a grade from the Czech Republic get you into India?

We do not yet hold published entry requirements for India, so we do not compare your grade against a bar we cannot cite. The conversion above still tells you how your result reads in India terms.

Výborně (1) → 4.0 GPA. Velmi dobře (2) → approximately 3.3 GPA.

What goes wrong converting grades from the Czech Republic to India?

the Czech Republic runs an inverted scale where 1 is the BEST grade, while India runs the normal way round. Reading a result from the Czech Republic as though higher were better inverts the conclusion entirely. India rarely awards near the top of its own scale — 90 is realistically the ceiling rather than 100 — so a converted result will look lower than you expect even when it is strong.

Mistakes specific to the Czech Republic grades

  • Reading the scale as though higher were better. A 1 is excellent here and a 4 is a fail.
  • Treating pass or fail zápočet entries as missing grades. They are a normal part of Czech assessment and are not an omission.
  • Assuming fine distinctions exist. With three passing values, the scale cannot separate good from outstanding the way a percentage can.

What should you do next, applying from the Czech Republic to India?

  1. Check the course, not the country. Entry requirements are set per programme and revised every cycle. We hold no published national bar for this destination, so the course page is the only figure that binds.
  2. Do not read the two scales the same way round. the Czech Republic runs an inverted scale where a lower number is the better grade, while India runs the usual way. This is the single most common misreading on this route.
  3. Check whether an evaluation is even required. Unlike the US and Canada, India universities commonly assess foreign transcripts in-house. Confirm on the course page before paying for a report you may not need.
  4. Get your documents moving early. Universities normally require your transcript sent directly by your institution rather than as a copy from you, which takes longer than most applicants expect.
  5. Read both systems in full. How Czech Republic grading works · How India grading works

What do these grading terms mean?

GPA (Grade Point Average)
The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
Percentage scale
A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.
Credits / credit hours
A measure of how much a subject counts toward your degree — bigger subjects carry more credits and pull your average further.
Transcript
The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)
The same idea as a GPA but covering your whole degree rather than one term — the scale differs by country (India 10, Nigeria 5.0, Pakistan 4.0), so the number alone means nothing without its scale.
Degree classification
A named band your final result falls into — First Class, 2:1, Distinction — used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 1 from the Czech Republic on India's scale?

Approximately 85–90 / 100 — Distinction. That is a range rather than a single number because grade conversion is an estimate, and the range widens where either country's data is less certain. Enter your own grade in the converter above for your figure.
