How does the Czech Republic grading system work?
Czech universities use an inverted 1–4 scale where 1 is the best grade. Minimum pass is 3. Some use a 1–5 scale.
Czech universities use an inverted scale where 1 is the best grade: 1 výborně (excellent), 2 velmi dobře (very good), 3 dobře (good) and 4 nevyhověl (fail). The pass mark is 3, so only three passing grades exist.
Many courses are also assessed as zápočet — a credit awarded on a pass or fail basis with no numeric grade — so a Czech transcript often mixes graded and ungraded entries.
Final state examinations and the thesis defence carry substantial weight in the overall result, more than a running average would suggest.

What does a good grade actually look like in the Czech Republic?
With only three passing grades, a Czech transcript compresses a wide range of performance into very few values — a 1 covers everything from good to outstanding. That coarseness, combined with the inverted direction, makes Czech results easy to misread abroad in both directions: a 2 is a solid result rather than a near-fail, and the absence of a numeric grade on zápočet subjects is normal rather than a gap in the record.

What do people get wrong about grades from the Czech Republic?
- Reading the scale as though higher were better. A 1 is excellent here and a 4 is a fail.
- Treating pass or fail zápočet entries as missing grades. They are a normal part of Czech assessment and are not an omission.
- Assuming fine distinctions exist. With three passing values, the scale cannot separate good from outstanding the way a percentage can.
What grade do you need to study abroad from the Czech Republic?
Each destination below publishes its own typical entry requirement for a taught master's — a one-to-two-year postgraduate degree made mostly of classes. What do these grading terms mean?
- GPA (Grade Point Average)
- The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
- Percentage scale
- A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.
- Credits / credit hours
- A measure of how much a subject counts toward your degree — bigger subjects carry more credits and pull your average further.
- Transcript
- The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.

Can you study abroad with a low grade from the Czech Republic?
Often yes, but be specific rather than hopeful about it.
