Do Hong Kong and Tanzania mark to the same standard?

No โ€” and it is the difference in marking culture, not the arithmetic, that makes a direct comparison mislead. Here is how each country actually uses its own scale.

What a good grade means in Hong Kong

Hong Kong universities are internationally selective and grade accordingly, with First Class Honours awarded to a small proportion of each cohort. The dual system is the practical advantage: applying to the US, lead with the GPA; applying to the UK, Australia or Singapore, lead with the classification. The one detail to check is whether your institution uses the 4.0 or the 4.3 scale, since an A+ at 4.3 makes the maximum higher than an American reader assumes.

What a good grade means in Tanzania

The 5.0 maximum is the thing most likely to cause a misreading: a Tanzanian GPA of 4.0 is an Upper Second, a good result, but read against a 4.0 scale it appears to be a perfect score. Always write the scale alongside the number. As in Kenya and Nigeria, the classifications carry the meaning โ€” a First Class is genuinely uncommon, and an Upper Second maps onto the 2:1 that UK and Irish master's courses ask for.

Will a grade from Hong Kong get you into Tanzania?

We do not yet hold published entry requirements for Tanzania, so we do not compare your grade against a bar we cannot cite. The conversion above still tells you how your result reads in Tanzania terms.

HK 4.0 GPA maps near-directly to US GPA. First Class (3.5โ€“4.0) โ†’ approximately 3.85 GPA.

Mistakes specific to Hong Kong grades

  • Quoting a GPA without saying whether the maximum is 4.0 or 4.3. On a 4.3 scale a 4.0 is an A rather than a perfect score.
  • Presenting only the GPA to a UK university, when the honours classification is what that admissions office reads.
  • Assuming Hong Kong and mainland Chinese transcripts are read the same way. The systems and verification routes differ.

What should you do next, applying from Hong Kong to Tanzania?

  1. Check the course, not the country. Entry requirements are set per programme and revised every cycle. We hold no published national bar for this destination, so the course page is the only figure that binds.
  2. Check whether an evaluation is even required. Unlike the US and Canada, Tanzania universities commonly assess foreign transcripts in-house. Confirm on the course page before paying for a report you may not need.
  3. Get your documents moving early. Universities normally require your transcript sent directly by your institution rather than as a copy from you, which takes longer than most applicants expect.

What do these grading terms mean?

GPA (Grade Point Average)
The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0โ€“4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top โ€” so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90โ€“100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
Degree classification
A named band your final result falls into โ€” First Class, 2:1, Distinction โ€” used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.
First Class Honours
The top degree classification, awarded to a small minority of graduates โ€” usually 70%+ in the UK and Ireland, or a CGPA of 4.50+ on Nigeria's 5.0 scale.
2:1 (Upper Second Class)
The second-highest degree class, and the grade most UK and Irish master's courses ask for โ€” usually 60โ€“69%.
Honours degree
A bachelor's degree that includes a higher-level final year or research project โ€” in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand it is often an extra year, and master's entry can depend on it.
Transcript
The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got โ€” not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 3.50 from Hong Kong on Tanzania's scale?

Approximately 3.81โ€“5.00 / 5 โ€” First Class. That is a range rather than a single number because grade conversion is an estimate, and the range widens where either country's data is less certain. Enter your own grade in the converter above for your figure.
