How does the Tanzania grading system work?
Tanzanian universities use a 5.0 GPA scale with British-style degree classifications.
Tanzanian universities commonly use a 5.0 GPA, following the University of Dar es Salaam pattern, with classifications attached: First Class from 4.4, Upper Second from 3.5, Lower Second from 2.7 and Pass below that.
Some institutions use a 4.0 GPA or report percentages instead, so the maximum has to be stated for the figure to be interpretable.
The classification names follow the British pattern, which makes the result readable in the UK and across the Commonwealth even where the numeric scale is unfamiliar.

What does a good grade actually look like in Tanzania?
The 5.0 maximum is the thing most likely to cause a misreading: a Tanzanian GPA of 4.0 is an Upper Second, a good result, but read against a 4.0 scale it appears to be a perfect score. Always write the scale alongside the number. As in Kenya and Nigeria, the classifications carry the meaning — a First Class is genuinely uncommon, and an Upper Second maps onto the 2:1 that UK and Irish master's courses ask for.

Tanzanian bachelor's degrees run three to four years depending on the field, with medicine and engineering longer. Where yours is three years, the 16-year question can arise for US graduate admission in the same way it does for Indian and South African three-year degrees.
What do people get wrong about grades from Tanzania?
- Quoting a GPA without its maximum. A 4.0 on Tanzania's 5.0 scale is an Upper Second, not the perfect score it looks like on a 4.0 scale.
- Assuming every Tanzanian university uses the 5.0 scale. Some use 4.0 or percentages, and your transcript should state which.
- Leaving out the classification, which travels better internationally than the raw number does.

What do these grading terms mean?
- GPA (Grade Point Average)
- The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
- CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)
- The same idea as a GPA but covering your whole degree rather than one term — the scale differs by country (India 10, Nigeria 5.0, Pakistan 4.0), so the number alone means nothing without its scale.
- Degree classification
- A named band your final result falls into — First Class, 2:1, Distinction — used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.
- 2:1 (Upper Second Class)
- The second-highest degree class, and the grade most UK and Irish master's courses ask for — usually 60–69%.
- Transcript
- The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
