What a good grade means in Nepal

Nepali marking is strict in the same way Indian marking is, and for the same historical reasons: the scales are related and the examining culture is conservative. Scores above 80% are rare and an aggregate above 85% is exceptional, so a First Division at 65% is a genuinely respectable degree rather than the unimpressive number it looks like to a US reader. Anyone converting a Nepali percentage as though it were an American one will understate their result by a wide margin.

What a good grade means in Tanzania

The 5.0 maximum is the thing most likely to cause a misreading: a Tanzanian GPA of 4.0 is an Upper Second, a good result, but read against a 4.0 scale it appears to be a perfect score. Always write the scale alongside the number. As in Kenya and Nigeria, the classifications carry the meaning — a First Class is genuinely uncommon, and an Upper Second maps onto the 2:1 that UK and Irish master's courses ask for.

Mistakes specific to Nepal grades

• Reading a Nepali percentage as a US one. A 65% is a solid First Division here, not the low grade the same number would signal in the United States.
• Assuming every Nepali university uses percentages. Kathmandu and Pokhara programmes often issue a 4.0 GPA instead, and mixing the two produces nonsense.
• Submitting the mark sheet alone. Evaluators want the character certificate, migration certificate and provisional or final degree certificate as well.

What do these grading terms mean?

Percentage scale

A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.

GPA (Grade Point Average)

The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.

Degree classification

A named band your final result falls into — First Class, 2:1, Distinction — used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.

Grade compression

Where a marking culture rarely uses the top of its own scale, so the highest grades anyone actually earns sit well below the theoretical maximum.
