How does the Nigeria grading system work?

Nigerian universities use a 5.0 CGPA scale — not 4.0. First Class Honours requires 4.50–5.00 CGPA.

What a good grade means in Nigeria

Nigerian classification is strict, and it travels better than most applicants expect. A First Class is genuinely rare, and Cambridge's own equivalence table treats a Nigerian First (CGPA 4.5/5, or 70%) as matching a UK First — independent confirmation from a named institution that the classification is understood abroad. A 2:1 is a solid, competitive result for master's applications across the UK, Ireland and Australia, and you should present it as such rather than apologising for the number.

What a good grade means in Spain

Spanish marking is stricter than the 0–10 scale suggests to anyone reading it as a percentage divided by ten. Sobresaliente at 9 is uncommon, and Notable — from 7 — already represents a good degree. Matrícula de Honor is the one to highlight abroad because it is quota-limited: it tells a foreign admissions office you were among the top few in the class, which no raw number conveys on its own.

Will a grade from Nigeria get you into Spain?

What goes wrong converting grades from Nigeria to Spain?

The pass marks differ — 1.50 in Nigeria against 5.0 in Spain — so the two scales have different usable ranges and the middle of one is not the middle of the other.

Mistakes specific to Nigeria grades

• Letting a university read your CGPA against a 4.0 scale. Always write "4.20 on a 5.0 scale" — never the bare number.
• Converting a percentage as though it were a CGPA. A Nigerian 72% is a First Class; entered into a 5.0 CGPA field it becomes meaningless.
• Assuming your degree certificate or NYSC discharge is enough. Evaluators want the academic transcript, which is a different document.

What should you do next, applying from Nigeria to Spain?

1. Check the course, not the country. Entry requirements are set per programme and revised every cycle. We hold no published national bar for this destination, so the course page is the only figure that binds.
2. Confirm which scale your transcript uses. Nigeria awards grades on more than one scale (CGPA (5.0), Percentage (0–100)), and the same number means different things on each. Pick the matching one in the converter before you trust the result.
3. Check whether an evaluation is even required. Unlike the US and Canada, Spain universities commonly assess foreign transcripts in-house. Confirm on the course page before paying for a report you may not need.

Nigerian institutions are often slow to dispatch these, and that delay is the most common cause of missed application deadlines from Nigeria — start months earlier than feels necessary. Check your transcript states the CGPA scale explicitly; if it does not, ask for a covering letter that does.

What do these grading terms mean?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)

The same idea as a GPA but covering your whole degree rather than one term — the scale differs by country (India 10, Nigeria 5.0, Pakistan 4.0), so the number alone means nothing without its scale.

GPA (Grade Point Average)

The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.

Degree classification

A named band your final result falls into — First Class, 2:1, Distinction — used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.

First Class Honours

The top degree classification, awarded to a small minority of graduates — usually 70%+ in the UK and Ireland, or a CGPA of 4.50+ on Nigeria's 5.0 scale.

2:1 (Upper Second Class)

The second-highest degree class, and the grade most UK and Irish master's courses ask for — usually 60–69%.

Credential evaluation
