What a good grade means in Singapore

Singaporean degrees are highly regarded internationally, and the grading is demanding: NUS and NTU run bell-curve moderation, so grades reflect standing within a strong cohort rather than an absolute mark. That makes a CAP of 4.0 a genuinely good result even though, mapped to US letters, it sits at a B+ rather than an A. The honours class is the signal to lead with abroad, because Highest Distinction and Distinction are understood in Commonwealth terms in a way a raw 5.0-scale number is not.

What a good grade means in Turkey

The doubled-letter system is the thing worth explaining on an application, because AA and BA look like typographical oddities rather than distinct grades to an admissions officer unfamiliar with them. On substance, the 4.0 GPA maps closely to the US scale, so a Turkish 3.2 needs little translation — but the accompanying percentage does, since Turkish percentage marking is stricter than American and a 75 is a good result rather than a modest one.

Will a grade from Singapore get you into Turkey?

• Reading a CAP of 4.0 as equivalent to a US 4.0. On the 5.0 scale it corresponds to roughly a B+ average — a good result, but not a perfect one.
• Quoting a CAP without saying whether the scale is 5.0 (NUS, NTU) or 4.0 (SMU). The two are not interchangeable.
• Omitting the honours class. Highest Distinction and Distinction translate far better internationally than the underlying number.

What do these grading terms mean?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)

The same idea as a GPA but covering your whole degree rather than one term — the scale differs by country (India 10, Nigeria 5.0, Pakistan 4.0), so the number alone means nothing without its scale.

GPA (Grade Point Average)

The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.

Degree classification

A named band your final result falls into — First Class, 2:1, Distinction — used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.

Honours degree

A bachelor's degree that includes a higher-level final year or research project — in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand it is often an extra year, and master's entry can depend on it.
