Kenya Grading System Explained

Class of Degree / Percentage · pass mark 40

How do grades from Kenya convert to US GPA?

What kind of grade is this?

A Bachelor's / first-degree grade — for graduate (Master's) admission or employment

Got a school-leaving qualification instead — A-levels, Class 12, WASSCE, the Abitur? Here's what actually happens to those.

How does the Kenya grading system work?

Kenyan universities follow the British classification system under Commission for University Education (CUE) oversight.

Kenyan universities mark out of 100 and award classifications set out by the Commission for University Education: First Class Honours from 70%, Upper Second (2:1) from 60%, Lower Second (2:2) from 50% and Pass from 40%.

The classification is the headline result and appears on your degree certificate; the underlying percentage appears on the transcript.

The boundaries mirror the British system closely, which is a legacy of the education structure Kenya inherited and makes Kenyan degrees relatively easy for UK and Commonwealth admissions offices to read.

What does each grade mean in Kenya?

RangeClassification≈ US GPA
70 – 100First Class Honours3.9
60 – 69Second Class Upper (2:1)3.3
50 – 59Second Class Lower (2:2)2.7
40 – 49Pass1.7
0 – 39Fail

The table runs to 100, but in practice Kenya rarely awards above 85. That is the ceiling the converter anchors to, which is why it will never output a grade almost nobody in Kenya actually receives. Why we do that.

What does a good grade actually look like in Kenya?

Kenyan marking is genuinely strict at the top: a First Class requires 70% and is uncommon, with realistic top aggregates sitting in the low-to-mid 80s rather than the 90s. Because the bands match the British ones, a Kenyan 2:1 reads directly as a UK 2:1 — which is the standard entry requirement for taught master's across the UK and Ireland, so a Kenyan graduate with an Upper Second is in a stronger position abroad than the raw percentage suggests to an American reader.

How do WES and other evaluators read grades from Kenya?

First Class (70%+) → approximately 3.7–4.0 GPA.

Is a degree from Kenya accepted abroad?

Kenyan bachelor's degrees generally run four years, or five to six for engineering, law and medicine, which satisfies the 16-year expectation of US graduate schools without the difficulty three-year degrees face elsewhere.

What do people get wrong about grades from Kenya?

  • Comparing a Kenyan percentage to a US one. A 68% is a strong Upper Second here and would be read as a poor result on a US transcript.
  • Leaving the classification off the application. First Class and Upper Second are the terms UK and Commonwealth admissions actually respond to.
  • Underestimating transcript lead times. Kenyan universities can be slow to dispatch, and evaluators require documents sent directly by the institution.

What grade do you need to study abroad from Kenya?

Each destination below publishes its own typical entry requirement for a taught master's — a one-to-two-year postgraduate degree made mostly of classes. The last column restates that bar in Kenya's own grading terms, so you can hold it against your actual transcript instead of converting in your head.

The last column is a double conversion — the destination's bar onto the US 4.0 scale and then onto Kenya's, so its uncertainty is wider than a single conversion and it is shown as a range for that reason. Treat it as orientation, and check the course page for the bar that actually binds. How this is worked out.

Only destinations whose entry requirement we have read and cited appear here. Several countries publish no numeric bar at all — France admits on the dossier, Japan by entrance examination — and others we simply have not researched yet. An absent row never means “no requirement”.

The last column links the organisations that maintain each country's programme data — we hold none of it ourselves, and none of them can tell you whether you will be admitted. Several countries have no single national directory for postgraduate study at all: master's applications go straight to the university, so the course page is the authoritative source.

How do grades from Kenya compare, side by side?

Each of these sets Kenya against one destination in detail — the two grading cultures, the traps specific to that direction, and the converter preset for the route:

Applying to the US or Canada? Read the WES credential evaluation guide before you order — choosing the wrong report type is the most common (and costly) mistake.

What do these grading terms mean?

Percentage scale
A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.
Degree classification
A named band your final result falls into — First Class, 2:1, Distinction — used across the UK, Ireland, Nigeria, India and much of the Commonwealth instead of a single number.
First Class Honours
The top degree classification, awarded to a small minority of graduates — usually 70%+ in the UK and Ireland, or a CGPA of 4.50+ on Nigeria's 5.0 scale.
2:1 (Upper Second Class)
The second-highest degree class, and the grade most UK and Irish master's courses ask for — usually 60–69%.
Transcript
The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
Credential evaluation
A paid report from an approved company that restates your foreign qualification in local terms, which many US and Canadian universities require before they will assess you.

Frequently asked questions

Is a good grade in Kenya still good abroad?

Kenyan marking is genuinely strict at the top: a First Class requires 70% and is uncommon, with realistic top aggregates sitting in the low-to-mid 80s rather than the 90s. Because the bands match the British ones, a Kenyan 2:1 reads directly as a UK 2:1 — which is the standard entry requirement for taught master's across the UK and Ireland, so a Kenyan graduate with an Upper Second is in a stronger position abroad than the raw percentage suggests to an American reader.

Is a degree from Kenya accepted for a master's abroad?

Kenyan bachelor's degrees generally run four years, or five to six for engineering, law and medicine, which satisfies the 16-year expectation of US graduate schools without the difficulty three-year degrees face elsewhere.

What grade do you need to study abroad from Kenya?

It depends on the destination, and the spread is wide. Stated on Kenya's own scale, the typical taught-master's bar works out at roughly: Australia 47–53 / 100, Netherlands 48–52 / 100, New Zealand 48–52 / 100. Across the 12 destinations whose entry requirements we have read and cited, the lowest bar is Australia at about 47–53 / 100. These are typical requirements, not guarantees — selective programmes ask for more, and each figure is a conversion, so treat it as orientation and check the course page.

Can you study abroad with a low grade from Kenya?

Often yes, but be specific rather than hopeful about it. The lowest published bar among the destinations we hold data for is Australia at roughly 47–53 / 100 on Kenya's scale, so a result below that clears no destination on our list on grades alone. Below the bar the route is not closed — conversion, qualifying and pre-master's programmes exist in most countries and are designed for exactly this — but expect to need one, and expect grades to matter more where the programme is competitive. Convert your own grade above to see which bars it actually clears.
