How does the Russia grading system work?
Russian universities use a 1–5 scale with whole numbers only. 3 is minimum pass. Transcripts also include Zachot (Pass)/Nezachet (Fail) notations for practical work.
Russian universities use a five-point scale where 5 (otlichno, excellent) is the best, 4 is khorosho (good), 3 is udovletvoritelno (satisfactory) and 2 is a fail — so only three passing grades exist.
Many subjects are assessed as zachyot, a pass or fail credit with no numeric grade, so transcripts routinely mix graded and ungraded entries.
A diploma with distinction (krasny diplom, the "red diploma") requires a high proportion of 5s across the degree plus an excellent thesis, and is the strongest signal a Russian transcript carries.

What does a good grade actually look like in Russia?
Three passing grades cannot separate good work from outstanding work, so a Russian 5 covers a very wide band and the transcript alone under-describes strong students. That is precisely why the red diploma matters: it is the distinction that carries the information the numeric scale cannot, and it is worth stating explicitly on any application abroad. Conversely a 4 is a genuinely respectable grade rather than the mediocre result it looks like when read as "four out of five".

Russia now runs the Bologna structure with a four-year bakalavr followed by a two-year magistr, though the older five-year specialist degree remains in use in some fields and is generally assessed as equivalent to a master's.
What do people get wrong about grades from Russia?
- Converting the five-point scale proportionally. With three passing values, a 4 is a good grade and not the 80% that arithmetic suggests.
- Treating zachyot entries as missing grades. They are pass or fail credits and a normal part of the Russian record.
- Omitting the red diploma. It is the main way to distinguish an outstanding Russian degree, and the raw grades will not do it for you.
What grade do you need to study abroad from Russia?
Each destination below publishes its own typical entry requirement for a taught master's — a one-to-two-year postgraduate degree made mostly of classes. The last column restates that bar in Russia's own grading terms, so you can hold it against your actual transcript instead of converting in your head.
The last column is a double conversion — the destination's bar onto the US 4.0 scale and then onto Russia's, so its uncertainty is wider than a single conversion and it is shown as a range for that reason. Only destinations whose entry requirement we have read and cited appear here. Several countries publish no numeric bar at all — France admits on the dossier, Japan by entrance examination — and others we simply have not researched yet. An absent row never means “no requirement”.
The last column links the organisations that maintain each country's programme data — we hold none of it ourselves, and none of them can tell you whether you will be admitted. Several countries have no single national directory for postgraduate study at all: master's applications go straight to the university, so the course page is the authoritative source.

What do these grading terms mean?
- GPA (Grade Point Average)
- The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
- Percentage scale
- A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.
- Credits / credit hours
- A measure of how much a subject counts toward your degree — bigger subjects carry more credits and pull your average further.
- Transcript
- The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
- Credential evaluation
- A paid report from an approved company that restates your foreign qualification in local terms, which many US and Canadian universities require before they will assess you.
