Do the Czech Republic and France mark to the same standard?
No — and it is the difference in marking culture, not the arithmetic, that makes a direct comparison mislead. Here is how each country actually uses its own scale.
What a good grade means in the Czech Republic
With only three passing grades, a Czech transcript compresses a wide range of performance into very few values — a 1 covers everything from good to outstanding. That coarseness, combined with the inverted direction, makes Czech results easy to misread abroad in both directions: a 2 is a solid result rather than a near-fail, and the absence of a numeric grade on zápočet subjects is normal rather than a gap in the record.
What a good grade means in France
The 20-point scale is not designed to be filled. Marks above 16 are rare, above 18 essentially never awarded, and 20 is treated as theoretically unattainable rather than a target — the distribution clusters between 8 and 16 with a passing mean around 11 to 13, and only a small percentage of students reach Très bien. A 14/20 is therefore a genuinely strong degree. Anyone converting by multiplying by five and reading "70%" will misjudge it in both directions depending on which country they are comparing against.
Will a grade from the Czech Republic get you into France?
French master's admission is decided programme by programme on your full application dossier — motivation, coursework, references and fit — rather than against a published minimum grade. The commonly repeated "you need 12/20" is not a rule any French university publishes, so we don't compare your grade against it.
Výborně (1) → 4.0 GPA. Velmi dobře (2) → approximately 3.3 GPA.
What goes wrong converting grades from the Czech Republic to France?
the Czech Republic runs an inverted scale where 1 is the BEST grade, while France runs the normal way round. Reading a result from the Czech Republic as though higher were better inverts the conclusion entirely. France rarely awards near the top of its own scale — 18.0 is realistically the ceiling rather than 20.0 — so a converted result will look lower than you expect even when it is strong.
Mistakes specific to the Czech Republic grades
- Reading the scale as though higher were better. A 1 is excellent here and a 4 is a fail.
- Treating pass or fail zápočet entries as missing grades. They are a normal part of Czech assessment and are not an omission.
- Assuming fine distinctions exist. With three passing values, the scale cannot separate good from outstanding the way a percentage can.
What should you do next, applying from the Czech Republic to France?
- Check the course, not the country. Entry requirements are set per programme and revised every cycle. We hold no published national bar for this destination, so the course page is the only figure that binds.
- Do not read the two scales the same way round. the Czech Republic runs an inverted scale where a lower number is the better grade, while France runs the usual way. This is the single most common misreading on this route.
- Check whether an evaluation is even required. Unlike the US and Canada, France universities commonly assess foreign transcripts in-house. Confirm on the course page before paying for a report you may not need.
- Get your documents moving early. Universities normally require your transcript sent directly by your institution rather than as a copy from you, which takes longer than most applicants expect.

What do these grading terms mean?
- GPA (Grade Point Average)
- The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
- Percentage scale
- A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.
- Credits / credit hours
- A measure of how much a subject counts toward your degree — bigger subjects carry more credits and pull your average further.
- Transcript
- The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
- Grade compression
- Where a marking culture rarely uses the top of its own scale, so the highest grades anyone actually earns sit well below the theoretical maximum.
- Credential evaluation
- A paid report from an approved company that restates your foreign qualification in local terms, which many US and Canadian universities require before they will assess you.
Frequently asked questions
What is a 1 from the Czech Republic on France's scale?
Approximately 15.6–18.0 / 20 — Très bien / Excellent. That is a range rather than a single number because grade conversion is an estimate, and the range widens where either country's data is less certain. Enter your own grade in the converter above for your figure.
Can you study a master's in France with a degree from the Czech Republic?
French master's admission is decided programme by programme on your full application dossier — motivation, coursework, references and fit — rather than against a published minimum grade. The commonly repeated "you need 12/20" is not a rule any French university publishes, so we don't compare your grade against it. So converting your grade tells you how your result reads in France terms, but it will not tell you whether you clear a bar — because no such bar is published.
