How does the Ukraine grading system work?
Ukrainian universities traditionally use a 1–5 scale. Since 2014 many have adopted a 1–100 scale. Check your transcript to determine which applies.
Ukrainian universities historically used the same five-point scale as Russia, where 5 is excellent and 3 the minimum pass, and many transcripts still report it that way.
Since joining the Bologna process Ukraine also uses a 100-point scale mapped onto ECTS letter grades, so a modern transcript often shows the 100-point score, the ECTS letter and the traditional five-point grade together.
Which of the three a foreign university reads depends on the form they ask you to fill in, so check that the figure you quote matches the scale they mean.

What does a good grade actually look like in Ukraine?
The presence of three parallel scales on one transcript is the defining feature and the main source of error: a student may quote a 4 (traditional), a 'B' (ECTS) and an 82 (100-point) that all describe the same performance. The 100-point scale is not a percentage in the American sense — 60 is the pass mark and the distribution sits well below the top — so an 82 is a good result rather than the middling one it resembles. Where possible, send the transcript showing all three, which does the reconciling for the reader.

Wartime disruption has affected document issuance for many graduates, and universities abroad have generally been accommodating where records are hard to obtain — say so rather than leaving a gap unexplained.
What do people get wrong about grades from Ukraine?
- Quoting the 100-point score as though it were an American percentage. The pass mark is 60 and the usable range sits lower than a US reader expects.
- Mixing the five-point and 100-point figures on the same form. They describe the same result and quoting both interchangeably confuses evaluators.
- Omitting the ECTS letter where you have it — it is the version European admissions offices read most fluently.
What grade do you need to study abroad from Ukraine?
Each destination below publishes its own typical entry requirement for a taught master's — a one-to-two-year postgraduate degree made mostly of classes. The last column restates that bar in Ukraine's own grading terms, so you can hold it against your actual transcript instead of converting in your head.
The last column is a double conversion — the destination's bar onto the US 4.0 scale and then onto Ukraine's, so its uncertainty is wider than a single conversion and it is shown as a range for that reason. Treat it as orientation, and check the course page for the bar that actually binds. How this is worked out.
Only destinations whose entry requirement we have read and cited appear here. Several countries publish no numeric bar at all — France admits on the dossier, Japan by entrance examination — and others we simply have not researched yet. An absent row never means “no requirement”.
The last column links the organisations that maintain each country's programme data — we hold none of it ourselves, and none of them can tell you whether you will be admitted. Several countries have no single national directory for postgraduate study at all: master's applications go straight to the university, so the course page is the authoritative source.

What do these grading terms mean?
- Percentage scale
- A 0–100 marking scale — but the numbers are not comparable across countries: 70% is an outstanding result in the UK and a modest one in India.
- GPA (Grade Point Average)
- The US way of expressing an overall grade, on a 0–4.0 scale where 4.0 is the top — so a 4.0 is roughly what a 90–100% or a First Class would be elsewhere.
- Credits / credit hours
- A measure of how much a subject counts toward your degree — bigger subjects carry more credits and pull your average further.
- Transcript
- The official document from your university listing every subject you took and the grade you got — not the same as your degree certificate, and universities abroad want both.
- Credential evaluation
- A paid report from an approved company that restates your foreign qualification in local terms, which many US and Canadian universities require before they will assess you.
